William J. Dorgan and Helen Louise McIntosh

The Rhode Island family branch connecting the Dorgan, Hartnett, McIntosh, Dwyer, and Connell families.

Why This Family Branch Matters

William J. Dorgan and Helen Louise McIntosh belong to the later Rhode Island generation of the Dorgan family. Their story connects the East Cork Dorgan and Hartnett line to Providence, Cranston, Warwick, and later descendants in Rhode Island.

This page also helps explain a confusing naming issue in the family record. Although the family line has long used the names William Joseph Dorgan Sr., William Joseph Dorgan Jr., and William Joseph Dorgan III, several records identify the elder William as William John Dorgan. For this family archive, the name William Joseph Dorgan Sr. is used for continuity, while the record evidence for William John Dorgan is noted clearly.

William J. Dorgan Sr.: Name, Birth, and Immigration

William J. Dorgan Sr. was born in Ireland in 1897, the son of Patrick Joseph Dorgan and Mary Catherine Hartnett Dorgan. His Irish baptismal record identifies him as William John Dorgan, baptized in April 1897 at Ballycotton Chapel in the Diocese of Cloyne, County Cork. His baptismal sponsor was Margarita Roche.

As an infant, William crossed the Atlantic with his mother, Mary Catherine Hartnett Dorgan, and four of his siblings. They traveled from Queenstown, County Cork, aboard the Teutonic and arrived at Ellis Island, New York, on 9 June 1897. This passenger record connects William directly to the East Cork emigration story of the Dorgan family.

Later American records give conflicting birth dates for William. The 1905 Rhode Island Census gives 21 May 1897, his naturalization record gives 15 April 1897, and other later records give additional dates. The Irish baptismal evidence and the passenger record show that he belonged to the April 1897 East Cork birth-and-emigration timeline.

Helen Louise McIntosh: Providence Roots

Helen Louise McIntosh was born in Rhode Island, with the 1935 Rhode Island Census giving her birth date as 28 December 1905. She was the daughter of Charles L. McIntosh and Ellen L. Dwyer McIntosh.

In the 1910 U.S. Census, she appears as Hellen L. McIntosh, age four, living in Providence with her parents, Charles L. McIntosh and Ellen L. McIntosh, and her young brothers Charles A. McIntosh and Alfred F. McIntosh. By 1920, she appears as Helen McIntosh, age fourteen, listed as a granddaughter in a Providence household.

Helen’s family story later connects to the Connell household. Her mother, Ellen L. Dwyer McIntosh, married Joseph E. Connell, and Helen Louise spent many years connected to the household at 956 Chalkstone Avenue in Providence.

Marriage and Children

William J. Dorgan Sr. and Helen Louise McIntosh were married on 25 July 1923 in Fall River, Massachusetts. Their marriage record lists William as a chauffeur and gives his parents as Patrick Dorgan and Mary Hartnett, though the surname Hartnett was recorded imperfectly. Helen Louise was listed as the daughter of Charles L. McIntosh and Ellen L. Dwyer. This record documents the marriage of William J. Dorgan, son of Patrick Joseph Dorgan and Mary Catherine Hartnett Dorgan, and Helen Louise McIntosh, daughter of Charles L. McIntosh and Ellen L. Dwyer

This was William’s second marriage and Helen Louise’s first. William had previously been married to Jessie Greig in Providence in 1917. That earlier marriage belongs to a separate record page in this archive.

William J. Dorgan Sr. and Helen Louise McIntosh had three children:

William J. Dorgan Jr.

Helen L. Dorgan

Corinne H. Dorgan

Through their son William J. Dorgan Jr., this branch continues the direct Dorgan family line.

Separation, Work, and Family Support

William and Helen Louise separated in the late 1920s and were later divorced. The divorce record belongs to the difficult part of the family story, but it also helps explain why Helen Louise appears in later records with her children in the Connell household.

By 1935 and 1940, Helen Louise Dorgan and her children were living at 956 Chalkstone Avenue in Providence with Joseph E. Connell and Ellen L. Connell. The 1940 U.S. Census lists Helen Louise as divorced and living in the household with her three children: William J. Dorgan, Helen L. Dorgan, and Corinne H. Dorgan.

Helen Louise worked steadily while raising her children. She worked in the housekeeping department at the Homeopathic Hospital, later known as Roger Williams General Hospital. In the 1935 Rhode Island Census, she listed herself as a laundry folder. The 1940 U.S. Census lists her as a rating clerk. Later, she worked for many years in the Ladies’ Foundations departments of the Boston Store and the Outlet Company in downtown Providence. She retired from the Outlet Company in November 1973.

To her grandchildren, Helen Louise was known affectionately as “Ma Dorgan.”

William J. Dorgan Sr.: Later Life and Family Memory

William J. Dorgan Sr. worked as an auto mechanic, carpenter, chauffeur, and oil-truck driver. Family memory also connects him with house repair and building work in Rhode Island.

In later years, he lived in Warwick, Rhode Island. His death notice appeared in the Providence Journal after his death on 22 February 1983. The notice identified him as William J. Dorgan Sr., son of the late Patrick and Mary Dorgan, and gave his residence as 21 Beach Avenue, Warwick.

A personal family memory also belongs to this page. In 1969, William J. Dorgan III met his grandfather, William J. Dorgan Sr., for the first and only time. The meeting took place after a chance conversation revealed that William J. Dorgan Sr. was still living. A surviving photograph from 17 August 1969 preserves that meeting and is the only known photograph of William J. Dorgan Sr.

Why This Page Matters

The story of William J. Dorgan Sr. and Helen Louise McIntosh is both a record-based family history and a personal family memory. It connects the East Cork Dorgan and Hartnett line to Rhode Island, explains the confusing William Joseph / William John naming issue, and preserves the story of Helen Louise McIntosh Dorgan as a working mother who raised three children with the support of her extended family.

Research Cautions

Several records identify William as William John Dorgan, while the family line uses William Joseph Dorgan Sr. for continuity.

William’s birth date varies across records, but the strongest evidence places him in the April 1897 East Cork birth-and-baptism timeline.

Some census, directory, and marriage records contain errors or inconsistencies, including birthplace, surname spelling, and residence details.

The divorce and separation records are important, but they should be read with care and placed in the wider context of family memory, hardship, and survival.

Helen Louise McIntosh appears under several forms of her name, including Hellen L. McIntosh, Helen McIntosh, Helen L. Dorgan, and in some indexes, Helen L. Connell.
